According to a legend from the 16th century, Emperor Charles V is said to have ordered that those glasses be put there because the town guard had not seen the emperor coming. The city guard, who would go down in history as Hanske the Warrior, but according to some ‘Thyl Ulenspiegel’, is said to have fallen asleep because he had had too much to drink. In reality, the emblem in the coat of arms is not glasses but a gothic letter A of Audenaerde.
